IHSS Travel Support and Training Awards

The IHSS provides limited support for travel and training. Travel support awards enable students to participate in biennial International IHSS meetings, and training awards enable students and young scientists to spend 1-3 months in training/research at leading laboratories, where they can become better acquainted with new techniques and new aspects of research on humic substances. A Call for Applications for travel support awards (in those years when a biennial IHSS meeting is held) or a Call for Proposals for training awards (in other years) will be announced annually in the IHSS Newsletter and on the IHSS web site.

(A) IHSS Travel Support Award

Aims and conditions of IHSS Tavel Support to participate in International IHSS meetings

The aim of an IHSS travel support award is to:
Allow students to present their work and participate in the biannual International IHSS meetings
Ten awards will normally be granted. The number and amount of the awards will be determined by the President in consultation with the Treasurer and members of the travel support selection committee.
The award normally covers all or part of the costs of travel and subsistence for the conference.
Recipients of travel support awards will be honored at the conference banquet, where they will receive a cash award, a certificate and a one year membership in IHSS.
Malcolm Award - The travel support selection committee will select the top applicant for a special award: the Malcolm Award. This individual will receive a certificate and cash award of 250 US$ in addition to the regular travel support.
Evaluations and notifications of awards will be given to the applicants four (4) months prior to the IHSS International Meeting.

Eligibility guidelines for Travel Support to participate in IHSS meetings
Travel support will be granted only to students. Investigators who have completed their PhD degrees are not eligible.
Awards will be based primarily on the quality and originality of the scientific content of the manuscript and the applicant's record of scientific achievement. It should be made clear that the student has had a major part in designing and conducting the research and wishes to pursue a career in a field in which humic substances science is important.
A committee consisting of the IHSS President, Vice President, Past President and Board members will evaluate the applications for travel support awards.

IHSS Travel Support - How to apply

Electronic applications should be sent to the Vice President of IHSS, to the (email)address indicated in the appropriate call (advertised in the IHSS newsletter and in the International Meeting's web page).
- Applications must include:

a letter of application
Curriculum Vitae including a record of studies, (courses and grades)
a letter of evaluation from the applic ant's main supervisor
a manuscript of the paper to be presented (4 pages in total).

The new Guidelines for IHSS Travel Support for the meeting in 2008 are now available.

(B) IHSS Training Awards

IHSS Training Awards enable students and young scientists to:

Applications must demonstrate the potential importance of the training period for pursuing a career in humic substances science or a related field.

Three to five awards will be granted each year in which IHSS issues a Call for Proposals. The number and amount of the awards will be determined by the President in consultation with the Treasurer and members of the training award selection committee.

The award is meant to cover all or part of the costs of travel and subsistence for one to three months.

Eligibility Guidelines for IHSS Training Awards

Proposals may be submitted by graduate students (MSc, PhD) and young scientists. Priority will be given to graduate MSc and PhD students, but young scientists (i.e. 'a young scientist/researcher is someone who at the time of the application has not been in an established position for more than 2 years') may also apply, provided they are under the age of 35 years.

The emphasis will be placed on scientific excellence, creativity and potential as selection criteria. This applies at all levels: applicant's CV, standard of host institution and research program.

Applicants and their supervisors in the host institution should be IHSS members. Non-members applicants will not normally be supported financially by the IHSS.

Funding: Partnership arrangements (i.e. partial funding of travel and/or accommodation by host institution or other national and international organizations) for research periods are welcome and will be given priority .
